Vietnam in April: Weather, Regions and What to Plan
Is April a good time to visit Vietnam?
Yes, April is still good for almost the whole country, but it is a hot month and the three regions feel very different. The north is mild with drizzle, the centre is hot and dry with the beach season starting, and the south is at its hottest just before the rains arrive in May.
April is a month that still works for almost the whole of Vietnam, but it is a hot one, and the honest answer depends on where you are standing. The north is in the middle of a mild, damp spring. The centre is hot and dry, with the beach season getting going. The south is at the top of its heat curve, just before the afternoon downpours of May begin. Vietnam is about 1,650 km long, so “April in Vietnam” is really three different months sharing one calendar page.
April at a glance, region by region
The simplest way to plan is to stop thinking about one country and think about three climates. The table below gives the shape of the month; the sections after it explain what that means for your days.
| Region | April feel | Rain | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| North (Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long) | Mild spring, often grey | Light drizzle, some showers | City walking, karst scenery, bay cruises | Haze, humidity creeping up, terraces not yet green |
| Centre (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An, Nha Trang) | Hot, sunny, mostly dry | Little | Beaches, old towns, island trips | Midday sun, busy end of the month |
| South (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc) | Peak heat | Dry, with the first storms near the end of the month or in May | Early-morning sightseeing, boats, islands | Heat and humidity, afternoon fatigue |
February to April is the window that suits the whole country at once, and April is the end of it. That is useful to know, and it is not a reason to cram every region into one trip. The country is too long for that, and a hot month punishes a rushed schedule. For the general picture, see our guide to the best time to visit Vietnam and our best time tool.
Northern Vietnam in April: spring, drizzle and soft light
The north is the region that surprises people in April, because it is not yet the heat they have read about. This is genuine spring: temperatures in the low to high 20s Celsius, a soft grey sky on many days, and a fine drizzle that locals call by its own name and mostly ignore. Humidity is high, and it climbs as the month goes on, but the heavy summer rains and the typhoon risk (roughly July to September) are still months away.
Hanoi
Hanoi is at its most comfortable. The Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake, the Temple of Literature and the Ba Dinh area are all pleasant on foot, and the damp air keeps the city green. Egg coffee in a first-floor café above the lake suits a drizzly morning. If you want a structured evening, a private street food tour of Hanoi works well in spring because you are walking in mild air, not in the muggy heat of summer.
Two practical notes. First, Train Street is restricted and periodically closed by the authorities, so do not plan a day around it. Second, a drizzly day is a good day for the museums, the water puppet theatre and the cooking classes, so keep one or two indoor options in reserve.
Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay
Ninh Binh, about 100 km south of the capital, is lovely in April. The limestone peaks of Trang An and Tam Coc rise out of a green, flooded landscape, and the rowing boats glide under the caves in mild weather, with a little less sun on your neck than in summer. A day trip is the usual format, and a small-group option such as the Ninh Binh day trip from Hanoi for up to four guests keeps the pace relaxed.
Ha Long Bay and the quieter Lan Ha Bay are good in April, although the sky can be hazy and a low mist often sits on the water in the morning. That mist is atmospheric rather than a problem, but if a postcard-blue sky matters to you, October and November are statistically better. April cruises are generally calm, with no typhoon season to worry about. If you are choosing between the two bays, our comparison of Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay will help, and an overnight cruise such as the five-star overnight cruise on Lan Ha Bay from Hanoi gives you a quiet evening on the water at a comfortable time of year.
The northern mountains
Sapa and the high valleys are cool and fresh in April, a relief after a hot week elsewhere. The caveat is the rice. The terraces are not green yet and not golden either: the fields are being flooded and planted, so you get mirrored, water-filled steps and a lot of farm work rather than the postcard view. If your goal is the classic photograph, wait for June to September. If your goal is trekking, mountain air and village life with fewer crowds, April is a perfectly good month. Our rice terraces guide explains the calendar in more detail, and the Sapa destination page covers the practicalities.
Central Vietnam in April: the beach season begins
The centre is where April feels most generous. The rains of the previous autumn are long gone, the sea is calm, and the sky is blue for most of the day. This is the start of the beach season for Da Nang, Hoi An and Nha Trang, and it runs through the summer months. The heat is real, but usually tempered by a sea breeze on the coast.
Hue
Hue is hotter and more exposed than the coast, and the imperial monuments are open-air, with long walks across stone courtyards and little shade. Go early. The Imperial City, the royal tombs and the Thien Mu Pagoda are better in the first part of the morning, and you can take a long lunch and a river boat in the afternoon. A day from Da Nang, such as the full-day Hue Imperial City tour from Da Nang, covers the highlights if you do not stay overnight, although a night in Hue is much less rushed.
Da Nang and Hoi An
Da Nang has long, wide beaches, and April is a good month to use them. My Khe is at its best, the Son Tra peninsula is green and clear, and the Marble Mountains are best climbed first thing. Ba Na Hills, in the hills west of the city, is cooler than the coast, which is part of its appeal in a hot month, and a guided visit such as the Ba Na Hills nature experience from Da Nang goes beyond the Golden Bridge. Note that the bridge is part of a commercial resort, not a heritage site, and it is very busy at midday.
Hoi An is hot in the middle of the day and magical in the evening. The Ancient Town (UNESCO, 1999) is best before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m., when the lanterns come on and the streets cool. An Bang beach and the Cham Islands are at their best in the dry season, with calm water for snorkelling. For a cool, shaded activity in the middle of the day, a market visit and cookery lesson such as the Hoi An cooking tour with market visit is a sensible way to spend the hottest hours. If you are weighing the two towns, see our Hoi An or Da Nang comparison.
Nha Trang, Da Lat and the Highlands
Nha Trang is in its dry, sunny season, and its rainy period comes much later, roughly October to December. The islands, the Po Nagar Cham towers and the beaches all suit April. Inland, Da Lat is cool all year because of its altitude of about 1,500 m, which makes it an excellent escape from coastal heat, with pine forests, waterfalls and cool evenings. The Central Highlands around Buon Ma Thuot are hot and dry in April, at the end of the dry season, and the coffee country is dusty rather than green.
Southern Vietnam in April: peak heat before the rains
The south has no winter and two seasons, and April sits at the very end of the dry one. March and April are the hottest months, with 25 to 35 degrees Celsius and strong humidity, and the sun is high and fierce. The rains normally build in May, arriving as short, heavy downpours in the late afternoon rather than all-day grey weather. Towards the end of April you may see the first signs of this: a darkening sky at about four o’clock, a storm that lasts an hour, and then a steamy evening.
Ho Chi Minh City
Ho Chi Minh City is a city you do in two shifts in April. Start at 7 or 8 a.m. for the Reunification Palace, the War Remnants Museum, the Central Post Office and Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica (under long-running restoration). Break between about noon and three for lunch, a long coffee and air conditioning. Come out again for Nguyen Hue, a river cruise or the food streets once the heat drops. Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh to Suoi Tien) is an air-conditioned way to cross the city. Keep your phone away from the kerb, because bag and phone snatching from motorbikes is the main street-crime risk.
The Cu Chi Tunnels, 60 to 70 km north-west, are hot, enclosed and physically demanding in April, so go early and avoid the afternoon. One option is the Cu Chi Tunnels trip by speedboat, which gets you onto the river and out of the traffic for the outward leg. Whatever you choose, take plenty of water and expect to be damp by the end.
The Mekong Delta
The Mekong Delta is a good April choice because so much of it is done by boat, where there is a breeze, and under the shade of coconut palms. Cai Rang floating market at Can Tho trades at dawn, which fits perfectly with the heat advice: you see the best of it at about 6 a.m., and you are back at your hotel pool by noon. Do not confuse it with My Tho, which is a day trip from the city and has no floating market of that scale. Can Tho makes a good overnight base.
Phu Quoc, Mui Ne and the islands
Phu Quoc is still in its dry season, which runs roughly November to April, so April is one of the last good months for its west coast beaches, before the sea turns rough in the wet season. It is hot, but the water is warm and clear and the island has plenty of shade and air-conditioned resorts. Mui Ne, on the coast about 200 km north-east of Ho Chi Minh City, is dry and windy, which suits its sand dunes and kitesurfing, and it is not part of the Mekong Delta. Con Dao, reached by air or fast ferry only, is calm and quiet at this time of year.
How to handle the heat
April does not ask for much planning, but it does ask for a different rhythm.
- Start early. Be at the major sights by opening time. Between 7 and 10 a.m. the light is better and the crowds thinner.
- Break at midday. A pool, a long lunch, a massage or a cookery class suits the hottest hours.
- Return in the evening. Night markets, riverside walks and lantern-lit streets are at their best.
- Drink bottled or filtered water. Tap water is not drinkable anywhere in Vietnam, and you will drink more than you think.
- Carry cash for small purchases. Street food, markets and small cafés still prefer cash, though hotels, cruises and tours take cards. Prices are quoted in dong, at roughly 28,000 VND to 1 euro in 2026.
- Protect yourself from the sun. Hat, sunscreen, light long sleeves. A sunburn on day two ruins the week.

Crowds, prices and the end-of-month holidays
April is a shoulder month in most places, with fewer visitors than the high season of winter and the summer family period. The exception is the end of the month. 30 April (Reunification Day) and 1 May (Labour Day) are fixed national holidays, and many Vietnamese families travel. Domestic flights, the Reunification Express, sleeper buses and beach hotels at Da Nang, Nha Trang and Phu Quoc fill up around these days and prices rise. If your dates overlap, book early, or spend those days somewhere inland or in a city that empties out, such as Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, which are noticeably quieter on holiday days.
Do not confuse these with Tet, the lunar new year, which falls between late January and mid-February and has its own, far larger, disruption. April is not affected by it.
If you intend to fly between regions, our guide to domestic flights in Vietnam explains the airlines and airports.
A sensible April route
The temptation in April is to do everything because the weather “works” everywhere. Resist it. A relaxed route might be four days in the north (Hanoi, Ninh Binh and an overnight on the bay), a flight to the centre for four or five days between Hue, Da Nang and Hoi An, and a final stretch in Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta with a beach extension at Phu Quoc. That is already about two weeks, and it uses two domestic flights; the full version is laid out in our two-week Vietnam itinerary. If you have less time, choose one or two regions and do them properly. A hot month rewards slower travel.
How April compares with the months on either side
March is the balanced month, with a gentler south and a warmer north, and you can read more in our guide to Vietnam in March. May is the turning point: the heat becomes humid, the first rains arrive in the south and the centre, and the north warms up fast. See Vietnam in May before you commit to a late-spring trip. April sits between them as the month where the north is at its softest and the centre’s beach season is just opening.
Is Vietnam in April right for you?
It suits you if you like warm weather, want to combine beaches with culture, or want to see the north without the cold of winter. It is a good month for couples, friends and families who can handle heat, and a fine month for photography in the soft northern light. It is less suited to anyone who hates humidity, who wants green or golden terraces, or who wants to do the south at a fast pace in the middle of the day.
Vietnam in April: frequently asked questions
Is April a good month to visit Vietnam?
It is a good month for most of the country, provided you accept the heat. The north is mild, the centre is dry and sunny, and the south is hot but mostly dry. Plan outdoor sightseeing for the morning and rest in the afternoon.
What is the weather like in Hanoi in April?
Hanoi is in full spring: mild, often grey, with light drizzle on some days and humidity rising towards the end of the month. Temperatures sit in the low to high 20s Celsius, which is comfortable for walking the Old Quarter.
Is April too hot in Ho Chi Minh City?
March and April are the hottest months in the south, with 25 to 35 degrees Celsius and heavy humidity. It is manageable if you start early, break at midday and use air-conditioned museums, cafes and boats in the afternoon.
Is April a good time for the beach in Vietnam?
Yes for the centre and the south-central coast. Da Nang, Hoi An’s An Bang beach and Nha Trang are in their dry, sunny season with calm seas. Phu Quoc is also still in its dry season, though the heat is strong.
Will the rice terraces be green in April?
Not yet. In the northern mountains the terraces are being prepared and flooded around this time, and they turn green from about June and golden around September and October. April is better for mountain air and trekking than for the famous terrace views.
Are there public holidays in April that affect travel?
The fixed national holidays of 30 April and 1 May fall at the end of the month, and domestic flights, trains and beach hotels fill up around them. Book transport and rooms early for those days, or plan to be in a quiet area.
What should I pack for Vietnam in April?
Light, breathable clothes, a hat, sunscreen and sandals for the centre and south, plus a thin waterproof layer and a sweater for the north and for air-conditioned buses and trains. Bring a small umbrella for northern drizzle.
