Things to do in Cao Bang and Ban Gioc
Cao Bang is the far north-eastern corner of Vietnam, and Ban Gioc waterfall sits on the Chinese border itself. It is not a stop on a Ha Long Bay cruise or on the Ha Giang loop; it is a separate destination of its own.
Allow roughly 350 km from Hanoi by road and a full day each way, so the page needs several days, often combined with a Ha Giang trip. What you get is the waterfall, limestone karst scenery and a quiet region without the crowds of Sapa or Ha Long.
The water level changes the view: the falls are full and brown in the wet season, roughly June to September, and thinner in the dry months. Border-zone rules can change, so check official sources before you travel.
