Things to do in Mu Cang Chai
Mu Cang Chai is a district of terraced rice fields in the north-west mountains, a seasonal destination rather than a town to tour. The terraces turn green from about June and golden around September and October, so a single month is never the whole story; the harvest window is short and weather-dependent.
It is a different area from Sapa: more isolated, with no resort town and no Fansipan cable car, and it is not a UNESCO site. Reaching it takes several hours by road from Hanoi, so plan an overnight stay locally rather than a rushed day trip. Budget roughly 15-40 EUR a night for a simple homestay, and expect narrow, winding roads that can be slow after rain.
This page covers the terraces and the pass; for Sapa and Mai Chau, see their own pages.
