Things to do in Mai Chau
Mai Chau is a gentle valley of rice fields and stilt-house villages in the northern mountains, and the easiest of the region's highland stops. It is not Sapa, it is not a World Heritage Site, and it has no sweeping terraces like Mu Cang Chai. What it offers is flat, quiet walking and cycling between White Thai villages, then a night in a homestay.
Expect roughly three to four hours by road from Hanoi, longer in traffic or rain. One or two nights is enough: a simple homestay bed with dinner and breakfast usually costs about 10-25 EUR in 2026. The fields are at their best around September and October, when the rice turns gold. Winter, December to February, is cool and often grey.
Wilder Pu Luong lies nearby and has its own page.
