Things to do in Hoi An
Hoi An is a merchant port whose Ancient Town was inscribed by UNESCO in 1999: the Japanese Covered Bridge, timber merchant houses, lantern-lit lanes and some of the country's busiest tailors. Two confusions are worth clearing up first. My Son, roughly 40 km inland, is a Cham Hindu sanctuary (UNESCO, 1999), not a Khmer one.
And Hoi An has no airport: you fly into Da Nang and drive about 45 minutes. Plan one to two days in town plus a half day for My Son. Expect crowds in high season, and in some years the old town floods in October and November. Tailoring is the classic budget trap, so set a ceiling in EUR, compare quotes and check prices before ordering.
Da Nang keeps My Khe beach, the Marble Mountains and Ba Na Hills; Hue holds the imperial heritage.
